Have just bought a 1979 First 30. Was putting on the mast when the spreader snapped at the point of contact with the mast ... actually the foot (lug?) that fits into the spreader bar. It appears it had broken before and had been welded back on ... poorly. So I am wondering has this happened to anyone else.
My plan is to have the fracture area built up with aluminium spot welding and then to weld on the broken off part. When the corroded area in the centre (I presume a cavity left untouched by the weld ) was scraped down, two holes were revealed ... purpose unknown.
